Hello leaders! If you missed yesterday's leadership blog make sure you click on over to iStacie.com to catch up on chapters 7 & 8 of our current book, Bill Hybels' "Courageous Leadership".
Are you ready?? Let's learn today's leadership lesson!
Chapter 9 - The Art of Self-Leadership
"Say the word leadership and most leaders' minds migrate to the people who are under their care."
"What many people don't realize is that to lead well, a leader actually needs to be able to lead in all directions - north, south, east, and west."
Leading north - those whom you report to.
Leading east and west - those who are you peers.
Leading south - those who report to you.
Quick Question - Who are the people to your north, south, east, and west that you have the opportunity to lead today?
Of all the leaders "around" you, which is the most important one to lead? - YOURSELF!
Dee Hock suggest that, "it is the management of self that should occupy 50% of our time and the best of our ability."
Think about Jesus' pattern of self leadership...Intense ministry activity quickly followed by time for reflection, prayer, fasting, and solitude. He knew that he had to get by himself and refocus so that he could accomplish what he came to do.
Quick Question - Are you following Jesus' pattern of self leadership or are you too busy leading those "around" you?
The hardest person to lead is yourself...Because of this most leaders don't do it. No one can do self-leadership for us. It is this reason that many leaders never reach their God Potential!
Their is a lot depending on your self-leadership. Because of this, Bill Hybels gives 10 questions that every leader needs to be ask on a regular basis.
- Is my calling sure? - God are you still calling me to ______? If yes...Make it priority!
- Is my vision clear? - How can I lead people if where I'm going is fuzzy?
- Is my passion hot? - Do whatever you have to do, read whatever you have to read, go wherever you have to go to stay fired up.
- Am I developing my gifts? - What are your top 3 gifts & what have you done this week to make them stronger?
- Is my character submitted to Christ? - Every time you compromise character you compromise leadership.
- Is my pride subdued? - 1 Peter 5:5. Do you want opposition from God as you lead or do you want His grace and favor?
- Am I overcoming fear? - 1 John4:4. If God has asked you to do something then DO IT!
- Are interior issues undermining my leadership? - You have a past...It can shape or misshape your leadership.
- Is my pace sustainable? - "It is your responsibility to devise a sustainability plan and stick to it everyday."
- Is my love for God and people increasing? - It's not about the task...It's about loving God and loving people.
